Deputy Chief Constable Commendation

On November 15, 2001 Constable Gabriel Kojima responded to a disturbance at the Plaza Cabaret at 881 Granville Street. Also in attendance were Sgt.#1335 Curtis Robinson, Sgt.#419 Larry Weeks, Cst.#1699 Mike Hallam, Cst.#1475 Steve Eely, Cst.#1992 Brandon Steele, Cst.#1723 Brian Montague. Upon arrival it was determined that three males had threatened and assaulted a number of staff at this premise. It was immediately apparent that these males were Hell's Angels, known to be hostile towards Police and often armed. Three of our officers immediately became involved in a violent struggle with two of the suspects. During this fight a loaded handgun fell to the ground from one of the suspect's waistband. At the same time Constables Kojima and Montague identified a third suspect. As the suspect was approached he fled and in the process pulled a second loaded handgun. You pursued and collectively subdued this party.

Given their anti-police nature, and their propensity for violence involving weapons Hell's Angels are a very real threat to officers who encounter them in the course of their duties. During this incident, despite the danger and violence involved, you displayed the highest degree of professionalism and exception courage. It is with great pleasure that I present you with a DEPUTY CHIEF CONSTABLE'S COMMENDATION.

Signed: Gary Greer, Deputy Chief Constable
